Google Search Console is a tool that reports any problems Google may have when crawling your website.  Your website may look fine to you when browsing it, so you could be completely left in the dark about any problems Google may have without referring to Search Console.  

On your car there is a 'Check Engine light' and when it comes  on you probably call your mechanic who tells you to "bring it over and I will pull the codes".   Well in your car somewhere below the steering wheel is what is called an OBD2 port, this is where the mechanic plugs in to see what is wrong with your car.  Search Console is the OBD2 port for Google and your website.
