How To: Verification for Google Business Profile
As Google continues to crack down on spam and improve local listing authenticity, Google has picked up the pace requiring verification more frequently. Video verification has become the most common method for verifying a Google Business Profile (GBP). While it might sound a bit intimidating, the process is actually quite straightforward—as long as you’re prepared.
Preparation:
To prevent delays or rejections, gather all your materials prepped and easily accessible. We recommend that you show at least 2 forms of business documents. Choose from the list below and get these documents out now:
- Business license: Make sure your name and business address are clearly visible.
- Utility Bill: Only the business name and address need to be visible
- Business Insurance Policy: Business name and address name must be visible
- Other Documents:
- A bank statement can work (but no need to show account balances.)
- Fictitious Business Name statement - if your documents user different business names, you need to show an approved fictitious business name statement to provide that even though there are different business names, these are all documents for the same business entity.
Important: The mailing address on your documents should match the physical location you’re verifying. If you’re using a home office, that address must be consistent across all documents.
Standard Verification
If Google is not requiring video verification you should still pay attention to detail. Use you camera app to take clear photos of each document.
When you submit your verification (sometimes called an appeal) you will have the opportunity to provide 'supporting documents' this is when you would upload the pictures of your business documents.
Video Verification
Google uses video to visually confirm the legitimacy and physical presence of your business. The video:
- Must be recorded and submitted in one take—no cuts, no edits.
- Must show required documentation and physical signage that ties your business to your claimed location.
- Must be recorded directly in the Google Business Profile mobile interface, not uploaded or submitted separately.
What to Film in the Video:
Follow this exact sequence during the video recording to meet Google’s requirements:
- Start Outside:
- Begin recording on your phone.
- Show your street sign to help verify the location.
- Walk toward your home or office.
- Clearly display the address number on your building or mailbox.
- Enter the Building:
- Walk into the space where your business operates (for example, a home office or studio).
- Give a brief tour of your workspace to demonstrate it's an active business location.
- Show Proof of Business Ownership:
- Point your camera at your desk or workspace where your business documents are laid out.
- First, show your business license, making sure the business name and matching address are readable.
- Then show your bank statement, again confirming name and address only.
Reminder: Keep the video steady and continuous. Do not pause or switch apps during the process.
How to Start the Video Verification on Mobile
- On your phone, open Google Chrome and go to business.google.com.
- Log in with the Google account tied to your business.
- Locate your business profile
- Click the “Get Verified” button.
- Follow the prompts to begin video recording within the app.
We recommend doing a practice run (without recording) to familiarize yourself with the steps and ensure a smooth flow. - Watch the video before you submit
Final Tips
- Avoid background noise so the video is easy to follow.
- Be confident and clear—you’re simply walking through and showing that your business exists where you say it does.
- Take your time, but don’t linger too long on any one step.
